Scanning

Pictures are captured using a FLIR  thermal imaging camera of exceptional quality, capable of detecting temperature differences as small as 0.06 C.

The duration of the imaging process may vary, usually taking around 30 minutes for a Quick spot scan and up to 60 minutes for a full body scan. Following this, the analysis and diagnostic phase may take several days. At Therma-Health, we utilize cutting-edge computer software to assess the symmetry of heating patterns on the horse's body.

Upon completion, you will receive a comprehensive scanning report in PDF format via email. This report will include approx 25 pictures and clearly highlight all areas of interest.

The equine thermal imaging report is an invaluable resource for veterinarians, farriers, massage therapists, saddle fitters, and all equine professionals.

To ensure the highest quality images and minimize the impact of external factors on the readings, it is necessary to prepare the horse prior to the scanning session.

Place

The thermographic examination should take place indoors, in areas that are protected from sunlight and free from air drafts.

Rest

Allow the horse to rest and spend at least two hours in their stall or in the designated area for picture-taking before exercising to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, wind, or rain. The horse should not undergo any physical therapy within 24 hours before the thermographic examination. Additionally, acupuncture in the examination region should be avoided during the previous week.

Grooming

Ensure that the horse's coat is clean, dry, and without any conditioners, fly sprays, cooling or heating gels. Avoid bathing the horse on the day of the appointment and refrain from applying hoof oil or any other dressing around or under the feet.

Blancets

Remove blankets and wraps the night before the scanning or at least three hours prior to the appointment.

If conducting a thermal saddle fitting, do not oil the saddle within 48 hours of the appointment.

Mane plaiting

Braid the mane and tail at least two hours prior to the scanning session to prevent them from obstructing the thermal images taken from the skin surface. Do not pull the mane or tail within 24 hours before the consultation.

Medication

Unless directed by a veterinarian or if you believe it is inappropriate to stop administering medication, do not give the horse bute or any other anti-inflammatory drugs for 48 hours before the appointment. Avoid using anti-inflammatory medications, vasoactive drugs, regional and local blocks, sedation, and tranquilization due to their impact on superficial perfusion.
